Merano Thermal - Southtyrol

Architect Matteo Thun on the subject of the Merano Thermal Baths: „The Merano Thermal Baths will be unique in the whole of Europe and beyond. Nowhere else will you find such an oasis of green in the middle of the town. We are creating the thermal baths out of the DNA of the River Passer and the mountains. We are working for visitors of the 21st century, who see the thermal baths and water as a source of relaxation and wellbeing.“

Merano Therme

Where kings and emperors took the waters…
For over 150 years Merano has had the typical life and spirit of a spa. The first scientific reports on the curative aspects of the climate in Merano were written in 1836, when the resort was considered an ideal location for people with problems of the lungs in particular. For disorders of the digestive system, Merano later became famous for it grape cures, which are still recommended today and are part of the offering at the Merano Thermal Baths.
Famous visitors like Richard Strauss, Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke and the Empress Sissi soon gave Merano an international reputation as an exclusive spa. That in turn attracted the European nobility, for whom the elegant villas and luxury hotels were built that are still a dominant feature of the resort today, including the Pump Room and the splendid Kurhaus. In addition to shower baths and steam baths, completely new treatments were also introduced including radon water therapy, vibro-massage and mudpacks. The new thermal baths are therefore to be seen as the renewal of a long tradition of cures in Merano, revitalized with modern and innovative offerings – a wonderful project with fine prospects!
